About us and our sponsors

The Llanelli Open Bowls Tournaments are a continuation of what were known as the Llanelly Municipal Tournaments.

Originating in 1926, they have been run virtually continuously to this day, although without the efforts of League Secretaries Peter Dunkley, and latterly David Phillips, who kept the tournaments alive in the early 2000’s, could easily have been lost.

Competitors playing bowls

Since the re-organisation of the administration of Bowls in Carmarthenshire, the events have come under the control of the Carmarthen County Bowling Association.  This brings the tournaments, particularly the Roberts-Rolfe, back to their roots.

It was the committee of the Llanelly Bowling Week incorporating the South Wales Bowls Championship (the Roberts-Rolfe Cup) that were instrumental in forming the Carmarthen County Bowling Association in 1926.

Through the 1980’s and early 90’s the competitions were played on greens throughout the Llanelli area, but in recent years have been concentrated on the two greens at Parc Howard.  In 2006, Calsonic Bowling Club became the venue for the later stages of the A. J. Stacey singles and the Rotary Pairs.   This much improved green, coupled with the proximity of the Calsonic Social Club proved a great favourite with competitors and spectators alike, and the hospitable and hard-working members of the Calsonic Bowls Club ensured the events went without a hitch.

We were also fortunate in our choice of Sponsors for 2008 and with their support, the tournaments have increased prize money and both numbers and quality of competitors have improved.

Carmarthen County Council logo

Carmarthenshire County Council, principally in the person of Mr Huw Parsons, the Authority’s Marketing Manager, were tremendously supportive and enthusiastic throughout. In keeping with the Council approach to any endeavour, second best is not acceptable, and the aim is to restore the tournaments to the stature they once enjoyed in the South Wales Bowls scene.  As our main sponsors, it is fitting that they are associated with the Roberts-Rolfe singles, our premier event.

Gower Timber Ltd., a Timber and Building supplies company based in Penclawdd, again sponsored the A.J.Stacey Open Singles and were joined in 2008 by Calsonic Kansei Social Club, Bergoni Sportswear Ltd. helping to maintain the prize fund.

The involvement of Golden Charter and Arthur Cambrey, Funeral Directors of Llanelli, continued in the Rotary Pairs competition, and once again proved to be a success.

As in previous years, we were delighted to have Mr Cambrey’s company on Final night.
